| At some point, Riko was back in her changing room. How and when she got there was something she could only speculate. But, now she had to decide what she was going to wear. The current outfit she had on certainly had one some high praise. But, so did the hoodie! And the tank top and shorts combo. She frowned. Riko didn't want to take advantage of Etain's kindness.
Besides, she did have her own money. Mr. Ookami did give her a percentage of his fee. It was just a matter of when he would actually take a case to earn those fees that was shaky. But...she WAS working on a case right now. And it was one that required some undercover work! Somewhere in the middle of all this, was the purpose they had claimed to be their reason for trying on all these clothes.
"Sounds like a plan." she nodded to herself, before changing back into her uniform. She strolled with her items in hand and rejoined, Etain. Her face was still red, but it had died down considerably.

| Waiting for Riko to leave the changing rooms was causing Etain to become impatient, something she normally wasn't. She paused. Why am I becoming impatient? she wondered. She looked down at the items in her arms and blushed. Oh, that's probably why. She heard the door open and turned, smiling at Riko.
'S... so, you decided on w... what you want?' she asked, noticing that Riko's face was still red. She looked down at the clothes she was holding, her blush spreading. 'I... I can't make my mind up, myself.' She tightened her grip on the clothes, then looked up at Riko. 'What do you want me to get?' she asked, almost shouted, her cheeks a bright red.

| "Ah...I think so." she answered and looked down at the three options, "I think...that last one seemed to look pretty good."
She blushed as she looked over to what Etain was debating. To tell the truth, she couldn't quite decide on which one she should choose. After all, all three looked very good on her. That last outfit, especially. Riko did not seem like she was ever going to get rid of that blush.
"Well. As...good...as that last one was, you might want try the second set. Might not draw as much attention." She mustered up a wink to the detective, "Can't have everybody turning their heads as you walk by. Be hard to hunt for clues that way."
She managed to let out a slight giggle at that.
"I think I'll buy these other two." she held up her arms, "I'm sure I'll be able to find a use for them after the case is over."

| 'That one did look good on you,' she said with a smile. 'Though... y... you should get the hoodie as well,' Etain said, looking at the hoodie. 'It looks cute on you. But then again, you look cute in anything,' she added with a wink.
Looking down at the items she chose, Etain blushed again. Especially when Riko complimented her. And the wink. 'I... I think you're right,' she said, smiling at Riko. 'Though, if everyone's looking at me, you could go hunting for clues,' she added with a wink of her own.
'Those look really good on you,' Etain said with a nod. 'And you could wear them as part of a casual outfit after the case is over.' She turned slightly towards the exit of the changing area. 'Should we go and get these then?' she asked, smiling at Riko. 'Then we can go to my place,' she added with a wink.

| More winking and blushing. This time, with Riko on the receiving end. She still smirked her way through it. It looked like she had picked a few good winners, even if Etain seemed to approve of anything she might wear.
"Not a bad point." she said, "You keep the heads spinning and I'll snoop around all those places they don't want me to be."
Riko followed Etain out of the changing area and started towards the checkout lines. The other detective had voiced just what she had been thinking, herself. And again, thought about who else might find it cute on her. Although having Etain's approval certainly wasn't anything to sneer at, either. The way she had been able to pull off that last look in particular? Riko blushed.
"I'm looking forward to it." she replied.

| 'If I wore that third one, going from your reaction, we'd both be able to hunt for clues as everyone would be unconscious due to bloodloss,' Etain said with a giggle. Though she still blushed at the thought of wearing her third choice to the gym.
Waiting in the line to the checkout, Etain began to have some doubts about buying what she had chosen. She already had a fine gym kit at home. But Riko had liked it, and said she should get it, and, if she was honest with herself, Etain liked it as well.
As they drew near to the checkout, the blush that still coloured her cheeks grew. Soon it was their turn, so Etain put the items she had chosen to purchase on the counter, not looking at the girl behind the till as she scanned and bagged the four items. Etain looked at Riko and smiled. 'Come on, it's on me.'

| "A true knock out." Riko returned the giggle as she waited in line with a scarlet hue stretched across her cheeks. While she didn't have many doubts about her purchases, she was still planning on making use of the funds she had available to herself. When the girl at the register started scanning the items, Etain surprised Riko with her offer.
"A-are you sure?" she said, "It wouldn't be any trouble for me."
She had her things resting on the counter, already, but she was waiting to be able to pay for it, herself. Riko blushed as the girl behind went ahead and scanned it anyways. "Thank you." she said.

| The blush on Etain's cheeks intensified at Riko's words, as well as her giggle. 'I'm sure, Riko,' she said, smiling at the girl before she pulled her purse from her bag. 'And it's no trouble, honestly.' She turned as the rather cute girl behind the counter began to scan Riko's things and smiled. When she was finished, the girl told Etain the total, which the red head paid. She picked up the bag, thanked the girl and turned to Riko. 'Shall we go?' she said with a smile.
Etain lead the way from the shop, back towards her car. She unlocked it, placing her bag and the shopping back on the backseat, closed the door. She then climbed into the drivers seat, waited for Riko to get in, then did her seatbelt up, started the engine and drove out of the car park.

| She was rather grateful for the generosity. Etain paid for the clothes and soon they were back at her car and leaving the purchased items in the back seat. Riko climbed back into the passenger seat and looked over at Etain, "So, looks like I finally get to see this place of yours." she said, with a light chuckle.
Occupying herself during the ride over, Riko took her phone out and ran a quick search on the gym that they would be investigating. After all...that was what they were SUPPOSED to be doing. Not that anyone seemed to really be keeping tabs on how much work they may or may not have been doing. There wasn't much to look on the gym's site. It didn't seem to be all that remarkable and certainly not a hotbed of suspicious activity. Before she knew it, they were pulling up to Etain's place.

| 'That you do,' Etain said with a chuckle as they drove back to hers. As she drove, Etain tried to stay calm, as she didn't want to speed, nor did she want to swear in front of Riko. She'd probably heard worse, but Etain didn't want to seem to lose her cool in front of Riko.
She pulled up outside her place, turned the engine off. 'Well, here we are.' She opened her door and got out, closing it behind her. She retrieved her bag and the shopping bag from the backseat and, when Riko was out, locked the car. They were parked in front of a block of apartments.
Etain lead the way up the stairs to the third door along. She unlocked the door and invited Riko in. 'Welcome to my home,' she said, closing the door behind her, kicking her shoes off. She slipped her slippers on, then got a spare pair for Riko. The small hallway lead to a large room, with two doors to the left, one on the right.
The main room was furnished with a table, in front of a tv, around which sat a settee and two chairs. Four bookcases, a desk piled with papers occupied the rest of the room. She walked over to the settee and placed the bags down next to it. 'Make yourself at home,' she said to Riko. 'Would you like a drink?' she asked as she headed to the kitchen, the door on the right.

| Once they got the apartments, Riko followed Etain up towards her residence. The only time she felt a hint of apprehension, was when she stood by the door. Riko blushed, but stepped inside, anyways. She took the spare slippers and left her shoes by the door, alongside Etain's.
Then, she got the opportunity to take a look around. The main room looked cozy enough. Two other rooms were behind a pair of doors to her left and a kitchen was off to the right. After their things were left on the sette, Riko took Etain up on the offer and made herself at home. She walked around the main room and gave a casual once over to what was inside. She had a nice selection of books and her desk looked like it was seeing lots of use.
"Sure, thank you!" she said, "I...think I'll just have some water, thanks."
She smiled and took a seat in one of the chairs as she waited for Etain to rejoin her. "You have a very nice place." she remarked.

| Watching as Riko walked around the main room, Etain couldn't help but smile. She's a natural detective, she thought. Always inquisitive, always seeing everything. She smiled and nodded. 'One water coming up.'
She got two glasses out and poured two waters, before heading back to the main room. Seeing Riko sitting in one of the chairs made Etain pause. But she smiled and continued to the seating area. 'Thank you,' she said as she placed Riko's drink on the table in front of her. She placed her own drink in front of the other chair, before sitting. 'You're the first person I've brought home since...' she paused, her smile vanishing, her face falling. Her eyes moistened as they took on a sad, far away look. She blinked and focused on Riko. 'Well, it's been awhile since I've brought anyone home.' She smiled and picked up her drink, took a sip.

| It was an unusual thing to see Etain get so close to being on the brink of tears. Sure, they had only just met today, but Riko had seen the red haired woman in a largely flirty and teasing mood throughout the better part of their time together. She seemed to recover quickly, however. Riko found herself a bit torn. While her curiosity wanted her to inquire...she also didn't want to dredge up any bad memories.
After all, they had only just met. But, she was still happy to be here. And there was no sense in letting her know that. "I'm glad you invited me over." she said, taking a sip of her drink. She wasn't sure what else to say, she just took another sip and blushed a little bit more.

| Sitting, playing with her glass, Etain just stared at the contents for awhile, her mind elsewhere. A single tear rolled down her cheek, to fall into the water. The sight of it, as well as the sound of Riko's voice, snapped the read head out of her revere. She blinked and looked up at Riko, smiling.
'I'm glad I asked you,' she said with a wink. 'And I'm glad you came.' She took a sip from her water then sighed. 'Hey, Riko? Why did you become a detective?' she asked, looking at the water in her hands. She chuckled, shook her head. 'No, it's okay. You don't have to answer.' She smiled at Riko, but it didn't seem as smooth as before. It didn't quiet reach her eyes. 'Forget I asked.' She took another gulp of water. She put her glass down, before she stood. 'I'll just grab my things, then we can go to the gym, okay?'

| The odd behavior continued until she spotted a stray tear escape from Etain. Whatever she was thinking about was bothering her. Again, Riko was in the position of wanting to know, but not wanting to be impolite. Especially when she was a guest in the lovely red haired woman's home.
"Oh? Well --" Riko had started to answer her question when she was cut off. Apparently, it was a conversation that would lead down a certain path that, perhaps, Etain was just not ready to go down. Not that she would have minded explaining her reasons. True, they were personal, but enough time had passed, where she was more comfortable talking about it.
"Um...OK." she said, as Etain stood up, "Is there anything else I can do?"
As she asked, she wondered what the point of that question was. Etain needed to get some things, so it wasn't like she would be able to help out with that. She already had a few items in those shopping bags on the sette, so it wasn't like she needed to prepare much. Riko just wanted to feel like she could help, in some way, to repay Etain's hospitality.

| 'No, it's okay,' Etain said smiling down at Riko. 'I've just gotta grab a few things, then we can go.' With that she walked to one of the two rooms on the far side of the main room.
Etain closed the door behind her. It was her bedroom. It contained a double bed, a bedside cabinet on either side, a chest of draws and two cupboards. Etain walked over to one of the cupboards and opened it. She changed out of her "meeting clients clothes" and, after a little rummaging, into her investigating clothes. She now wore a pair of dark blue skinny jeans, a simple blue t-shirt and a jacket over it. She closed the cupboard and walked to the bedside cabinet on the side of the bed that looked most slept on. She opened the draw and pulled out her collapsible baton.
She stood and looked at the other side. She sighed, reached out and stroked the pillows there. She felt tears streaming down her cheeks, and before she knew it, was on her knees, on the other side of the bed, hugging the pillow, crying into it.

| Riko started off in the chair she had claimed as her own. It appeared she would have a bit more time to sit and think about things as she noted how she had worked through about half of the glass of water, while Etain's remained barely touched on the table in front of her. Eventually, she stood and took the two glasses into the kitchen. Cleaning a bit, after herself, at least helped to feel a little productive.
Of course that could only kill so much time. As long as it took to walk from the main room, to the kitchen, as a matter of fact. Etain remained in her room and Riko got the feeling it wasn't a debate over what to wear. Add to that her peculiar behavior from a few moments earlier and Riko didn't need much else to draw a conclusion. Something was bother the older detective.
This train of thought reached it's destination about the same time Riko reached the door that Etain had walked through. She stood, a little nervously, on the other side and hesitated. Should she intrude? Well, she didn't think it was a problem that would require kicking down the door, firing off a clever one-liner and dispatching some fiend that was threatening her.
Afterwards, Etain would say "Oh, thank you, Riko! I don't know what I would have done if you hadn't been here!" and the scene would fade as Riko took the red head in her arms and dipped her as they kissed. Riko blushed and shook her head. This wasn't the time for that sort of nonsense! She resolved herself and gently rapped her knuckles against the door.
"Um, Etain?" she said.
"Are you oK?" was what she wanted to say. But what she did say, was "Can I get you anything?"

| The tears just wouldn't stop, they kept coming as Etain sat, curled into a ball on the floor, hugging the pillow to her. She buried her face in it, her tears soaking into it.
The knock at the door, and Riko's voice calling her name made her head snap up. She wanted to stay on the floor, hugging her pillow, crying into it until she couldn't cry anymore. But she knew she had a job to do. She also didn't want Riko to see her like this, a crying, emotional wreck. She wanted Riko to only see her as the laughing, teasing, flirting detective.
'I... I... I'm okay,' she called out, her voice somewhat shaky, croaky. She flinched at the sound of her own voice, at the sound of tears in it. Also the fact she hadn't been asked if she was okay. She cleared her throat and tried again. 'I... I...' She couldn't finish as the tears flowed again, her vision blurring. 'I...' She buried her face in the pillow again, to make sure Riko didn't hear her sobs.

| The picture was clear. Etain was in distress over something and it wasn't a matter that Riko would be able to solve through the door. She also wondered if it would be easier to track down those missing persons, as opposed to helping Etain with whatever she was going through. But, just like with the missing gym rats, she still had to try.
Riko wouldn't be able to look herself in the mirror if she just gave up on someone. So, she rested a hand on the doorknob and then pushed it open. Inside, she found the red head curled up in a ball on the floor and sobbing into a pillow.
She felt strongly empathetic towards the older detective. And although she knew nothing about her situation, Riko still walked over and took a seat next to her on the ground. "It's OK..." she offered. Truthfully, that didn't make much sense to her. She had no way of knowing if it would really be OK, or not. It just sounded like the right thing to say. Riko put an arm around her shoulders as she cried.

| Hearing the door open, Etain curled tighter into a ball, burying her face deeper into the pillow. This is not how she wanted Riko to see her! It's not how she wanted anyone to see her! Curled up in a ball, crying like a baby!
She flinched even more as she heard Riko walk over to her, wishing the earth would open up and swallow her, then maybe she'd be able to see her again. That thought brought on a fresh wave of sobs. 'I... it can't be okay,' Etain said between sobs. 'She'll never come back.' She cried again, her body shaking with the sobs. She choked back the tears, managed to get herself under control. When Riko put an arm around her.
The floodgates opened again and Etian wrapped her arms around Riko, crying onto her shoulder, squeezing onto Riko as though she were afraid the girl would vanish. Would leave her alone, with her thoughts.

| Dealing with loss was never easy. Even after time passed, sometimes those feelings had a bad happen of creeping up on you. Riko was familiar with that. She didn't respond to Etain. It seemed like the best thing to do was to ride it all out. As the other detective buried her face into her shoulder, Riko hugged her back. She was sure that Etain would be fine once she was done crying.
Fine, being used in a very relative sense. She wouldn't be OK with losing whoever she had lost for some time. But, it would get better. Riko felt pretty sure about that. Losing her father had been quite the blow. She still missed him, sure, but she had come to the realization that she couldn't spend her life being sad about it. She still had his memory and still had to live up to his example, after all.

| Continuing to cry into Riko's shoulder, Etain tightened her grip on her, shaking her head. Why? Why was she crying? What had triggered it? She slept in this room, in this bed! So, why was she crying now, in front of this girl? She didn't know. No, wait, she did. She knew what had triggered it. That realisation helped calm her down. Her sobs quieted, her tears slowed. Soon she wasn't crying, though she still held onto Riko for awhile longer, drawing strength from the presence of the girl.
When she was calm enough, she sat back and wiped her eyes. 'S... sorry,' she said, smiling slightly at Riko. 'I... think I got your top wet.' She chuckled slightly, then sighed. 'I must look a right state.' She wiped her eyes again where tears were still slowly falling. 'I... didn't want you to see me like this,' she said. She swallowed and turned, picking up a picture from the bedside cabinet.
It was a picture of Etain, around seventeen, and an older woman. She had long, dark brown, almost black hair, and brown eyes, her lips were full and always seemed to be smiling. She had an arm around Etain's shoulders, her head resting against Etains. They were both smiling, though the older woman was blushing, Etain was just smiling, beaming.
Etain sat, stroking the face of the woman, smiling, a mixture of sadness and happiness. She looked at Riko and handed her the photo.

| Gradually, Etain seemed to get the tears under control. Or, at least the feelings that had caused them had passed. Not that she was about to let go of the dark haired detective any time soon. Riko still hugged her and didn't let go until Etain seemed ready. When she did, Riko just sat on the ground and leaned back against the bed. She looked up with a soft smile.
"Ah...heh, it's just the uniform, I'm sure it'll be fine." she said. Although the shoulder was rather wet, following it's encounter with Etain's sobbing. "Don't worry about it. Besides, I don't think anybody wants to be seen like that. Still, it doesn't hurt to have someone around."
She took the picture that Etain had handed over and looked it over. The younger girl in the photo was clearly Etain. 'She looked really cute, too!' she couldn't help but think. The older woman, though, she did not recognize. Although she could certainly guess. Probably the "She" that Etain claimed would not be coming back. She nodded at her understanding.
"What was her name?" she asked, looking back up from the photo.

| 'I'll pay for any cleaning bills,' Etain said, remembering that it was Riko's school uniform, which caused her to blush slightly, returning the soft smile Riko gave her. 'Ah, I guess that's true. Especially if they're older detective and don't want to embarrass themselves in front of a younger, cuter detective.' She chuckled, then sighed. 'Noemi,' she said, almost choking on the name. 'Noemi Hasegawa. S... she... was my partner. My girlfriend.'
'I met her when I was a little older than you, and she was a little older than I am now,' Etain said. 'I'd been watching her on the train we got together, and the first time we spoke, I kissed her.' She chuckled. 'I thought she'd hate me, think I was weird. But the next time I saw her, she took me to a cafe and we got to talking. She surprised me by kissing me. We saw each other regularly after that. That photo was taken on the morning after our first night together.' She looked over to the other bedside cabinet, where another photo sat. 'That one was taken on the day of our second anniversary.' She looked back to Riko. 'We were together for three years. Or we would have been. S... she... I found her on the day of our third anniversary.'
Tears were rolling down her cheeks. 'She was killed!' She buried her face in her hands as the tears flowed afresh. 'The police questioned me about it for two days! I'd lost the love of my life and they thought I'd done it!'

| "Oh I wouldn't be too worried about it." she said, "If I can't cover my own dry-cleaning then I'm a pretty lousy detective."
She could have explained exactly how she was employed with Mr. Ookami and the exact nature of that internship of hers. But at this point? Well, it seemed rather pointless to try and get into all that now. As Etain explained who the older woman was, the tears had returned. And also provided a rather curious problem. If she had found the body and the police had questioned her, then apparently Noemi had passed away under suspicious circumstances.
At some point, she would have to figure out what happened. She was sure that Etain was still investigating, but that didn't mean she couldn't lend her expertise to the case. Later, though. For now, Riko stood back up and hugged Etain, again.
